An Interesting Culture in West Sumatra Province – the Bajamba Feast
Indonesia is a beautiful nation as it is the home of tons of islands. Each province has unique cultures and characteristics, too. For example, it is Bajamba Feast. The locals call it “Makan Bejamba”. This is a well-known tradition in West Sumatra Province. Actually, it is a feast done by the locals (Minang People) in a particular place. These people perform it mostly during Islamic Holidays. Sometimes, it is also done during special events and traditional ceremonies. For tourists, Bajamba is considered interesting. In fact, many of them are coming to West Sumatra to join such event.
The History of Bajamba Feast
The Bajamba Feast became West Sumatra’s tradition since the first influence of Islam in Minang. It was about in the 7th Century. No wonder, the feast applies Islamic Shari’a. Today, Minang People conduct such tradition as the form of thanksgiving. They also conduct it during special events and ceremonies. They may choose the location first. Later, they gather and eat several foods together. Most of them are people of Agam Regency and Koto Gadang. In a nutshell, only those who live in Minangkabau do this unique tradition.
The Purpose and Application
As mentioned earlier, such tradition is done during important events. People in West Sumatra Province also conduct it to commemorate the city’s anniversary. They also conduct Bajamba Feast when greeting some guests. The main purpose is to retain hospitality and humbleness. It is because many people gather in the same place regardless of social status and wealth. At least, there are about tens or hundreds of people join it. They eat, laugh, and chat wholeheartedly in that location. Not to mention the foods are also great.
There are several things to know regarding Bajamba Feast. First, it is the tray. People in Minangkabau use giant trays to serve the foods. The name is “Pinggan”. For men, they must sit comfortably by crossing their legs. This is called “Baselo”. For women, they must sit by their knees. When it comes to the foods, there are numerous types such as “rendang”, chicken curry, “anyang”, meat curry, and much more. There is also an important rule. All the foods must be available. That means people must not miss anything when preparing the feast.
Bajamba Feast is a local tradition. That means there are several rules, as well. For instance, only the oldest people are allowed to begin the feast. They must use the right hand when eating and they use the left hand as a container. This way, they can prevent the foods from falling. When eating, their body should be upright. Another important aspect is the cleanliness. All the guests should wash their hands prior to eating.

The best location to witness and join the feast is in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra. That means you need to head to that city first.
By bus: If you come by bus, you should head to Aur Kuring Terminal in Guguk Panjang. Rent a tour guide to bring you to some villages in Bukittinggi.
By train: For those who come by train, your destination is Padangpanjang Station. From there, you can take a cab to Bukittinggi.
By airplane: What about an airplane? Well, you can directly head to Minangkabau International Airport. It is located in Padang City. From there, you can take either a taxi or local bus to Bukittinggi.
